James Carty John Carty - Blessing's Black Cow / The Laurel Tree

from Hiding Daylight in Dark Corners by James Carty

about

Leitrim Flute player John Blessing from Aughavas is the source of the first reel, also known as Tom Dowd’s favourite and John Egan’s. The tune also appears in Brendan Breathnach’s book Folk Music and Dances of Ireland as the Annamaculleen Reel as collected from Flute player Des Higgins of Cloone Co. Leitrim. The second was learned from Mick Gorman, nephew of Michael, who called it The Laurel Tree, although the first part is strikingly similar to Paddy Taylor’s.
