Meadbh -The Crimson Path, is a unique collaboration between poet Ann Joyce and traditional musician and composer John Carty. Through original narrative, poetry, music and song, it relates the legend of Queen Meadbh (Maeve), fabled warrior queen of the Irish province of Connacht and journeys through the ancient and mythical landscape of 1st century Celtic Ireland. Signs and symbols were an important feature of this landscape and the queen's destiny was always foretold with portents and omens.
Meadbh ruled from her palace at Cruachan (Rathcroghan) Co. Roscommon. She declared war on Ulster in order to capture the Donn Cuailgne - the Brown Bull of Cooley. The legend tells of Meadbh who coveted this Brown Bull to match Finnbennach, the White-horned Bull, owned by her husband Ailill. She set off with her army from Cruachan to take the Brown Bull by force. Armies from Munster and Leinster joined her in the long march to Ulster.
Cuchulainn, known as the Hound of Ulster, was a warrior of extraordinary skill and valour. He kept watch for the approach of Meadbh’s army and during the long battle the warrior hero fought valiantly killing thousands of Meadbh's men. Ferdia, his foster-brother and lifelong friend, a warrior of equal skill and courage, reluctantly challenged him but he too was slain. The Ulstermen eventually drove the Connacht army out of their territory, but Meadbh captured the Brown Bull and brought him west to Connacht. Here, the two bulls fought resulting in the death of both.
Meadbh continued to reign at Cruachan. She died whilst swimming in Lough Ree after being hit by a stone from her nephew's slingshot. Her death ended the matriarchal rule of the warrior Queen, lessened the role of women in Celtic society and enhanced the rise of the cult of the male hero. She is reputedly buried under the cairn on Knocknarea, Co Sligo but some believe Cruachan is her final resting place.
